Temazcal: Therapy for the body and soul

Stemming from the native Nahuatl word “temazacalli” which translates to “house of steam” the Temazcal is a steam bath created with infusions of indigenous herbs meant to clarify both the body and mind.

The Temazcal is based on the principal of release.  Release of the physical pollutants that one encounters in urban life such as air pollution, free radicals and environmental contaminates and release of emotional contaminates like stress, anxiety and depression.

It is performed a domed chamber often made of adobe or stone, which simultaneously symbolically represents the security of a mother’s womb and one’s place within the universe.   The space is small and dark, removing external stimulus to allow one to focus on one’s internal self.

The ritual is lead by a guide referred to as a “temazcalero” who will place volcanic stones in the center of the dome and lay ceremonial shells and incense in a circular pattern around the exterior of the small structure.  To create the steam a tea of various herbs including eucalyptus, chamomile, rosemary, citrus peel, verbena and patchouli is brewed and the steam is circulated with fans made from bundles of herbs. The temazcalero will also make cold compresses for bathers who may feel some claustrophobia or dizziness or assist them with breathing techniques to calm any distress.

Once the Temazcal is completed, bathers are wrapped in a sheet or a light blanket and instructed to lay still and rest.  They are given an herbal tea or a light soup to assist in returning fluids to the body without causing a rapid change in internal temperature.

Temazcal is an ancient purification ritual first practiced by the aboriginal peoples of Mexico and Central American prior to the introduction of Spanish culture to Latin America.

The interest in Temazcal, the practice of which was almost eradicated Spanish conquerors, has seen resurgence as the interest in a return to ancient and holistic healingpractices has grown.
