A weekend in San Blas

Approximately a 4 hour drive north from Puerto Vallarta, you will find this charming town and its sprawling beaches that are popular with surfers and kite boarders.  And the amazing array of bird species in the area makes San Blas a bird-watchers paradise.

Be sure to visit the La Tovara Wildlife Refuge which offers boat tours through the mangroves where you will encounter dozens of birds pointed out by your sharp-eyed guide and wild crocodiles swimming alongside you in the river.  The tour also includes a stop at a crocodile reserve and a cordoned off swimming area with a small restaurant.  Visit www.latovara.com for more details.

There are many small hotels in San Blas, including the gorgeous Flamingos Hacienda Hotel located just of the town square.  This 140 old hacienda has been carefully and lovingly restored to its former glory and is now one of the most beautiful hotels in the region.  Enjoy lounging in a rocking chair in the central courtyard surrounded by antiques, a lush garden and a trickling fountain while staying in one of the 20 unique and lovely rooms.

There are many casual dining options in San Blas but for a truly fine-dining experience, visit El Delfin at the Hotel Garza Canela, where Le Cordon Blue Paris trained chef, Betty Vazquez, offers a delicious menu, an appealing wine list and very gracious service.

There are many destinations around Puerto Vallarta that make for wonderful day or overnight trips and San Blas, Nayarit is no exception.

For those who love nature and the beach but also have a taste for some of the finer things in life, San Blas is a perfect little town for an overnight visit during your trip to Puerto Vallarta.
