Top 10 Ways to Prepare for Retirement, Part II

1.  Financial Planning:  of course, financial planning is the key to ensuring that you are economically comfortable throughout your retirement.  But wise money management and lowering your monthly living expenses is the key to lasting financial freedom.  Start considering how the categories in your monthly budget should be calculated.

2. Focus on Wellness:  numerous medical studies have shown that the best way to maintain good physical heath and mobility into one’s senior years is to start an exercise program even if physical fitness has not been a priority in the past.  Research walking clubs, fitness classes tailored to older participants, or other physical activities that interest you.  Also, consider vegetarian or low-fat cooking classes as a fun activity that will not only teach you some delicious new recipes but also show you ways that you can eat a healthier and more heart-friendly diet.

3. Estate Planning:  as you transition into retirement, it is an ideal time to ensure that your final wishes are properly documented.  Make an appointment with your lawyer to discuss topics like your Will, last wishes, organ donation, Living Will, and other issues that are important to you.

4. Bucket List:  take some time to write a list of things that you always wanted to accomplish but never had the time to achieve.  Places not visited, books left unread, foods never tasted, adventures never taken, now is the time to start planning how to realize those dreams.

5. Preserving Family Memories:  be certain that your family legacy will live on by organizing family photos, audiotapes and videos.  As photograph paper and audio or video tape will break down over time, consider transferring all of those memories onto CD, DVD or external USB.

As per the previous installment, creating plans for travel, volunteering, strengthening family bonds, learning new skills and establishing new social circles are all positive ways in which one can ease the transition from career to retirement.  In the final part of our series, Luxury Beach offers five further suggestions for emotionally, financially and physically preparing for your golden years.
