Top 10 Ways to Prepare for Retirement, Part I

Preparing for retirement is more than simply preparing a financial nest egg, it’s also preparing for a new lifestyle.  Luxury Beach presents two part series offering ten retirement suggestions to help bring a shine to your golden years.

1.    Travel:  finally the time has come when holidays are no longer dictated by company-mandated vacation time.  And traveling doesn’t always mean long flights and suitcases.  Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit are in close proximity to many charming towns like San Sebastian del Oeste, Mascota and San Pancho, just to name a few, which make for wonderful day trips.  Consult with your Luxury Beach concierge to start planning your exploration of the area.

2.    Volunteer:  volunteering not only offers the opportunity to give back to your community, but allows you to add structure to your weekly schedule and a chance to use the organizational, team-building and problem-solving skills that you have mastered over the course of your career.  Sites like www.volunteermatch.org can help you find the ideal volunteering position to suit your experience and interests.

3.    Family Bonds:  now is the time to consider reinstating lost family traditions and creating new ones.  Consider new ways that you and your children, grandchildren and extended family can bond through new or renewed activities.

4.    Learn New Skills:  start thinking about the things that you have always wished you could do, be it learning a new language, a musical instrument, a craft or a hobby.  Studies show that learning new skills in later adulthood not only assists in maintaining mental agility but also in memory retention.

5.    Friendships:  for many, their workplace provides the majority of their social ties.  Prior to retirement is the time to start expanding your social circle.  Book clubs, sports clubs and common-interest groups are all great places to meet new people.   For listings of events and social clubs in Puerto Vallarta, visit http://visitpuertovallarta.com/

Throughout one’s career, many hours are dedicated to dreaming about finally stepping away from the routine of a nine-to-five job and into the freedom of retirement.  But commonly, the actual transition from a working life into retirement can be emotionally challenging and it is often a struggle to find a post-career identity.

Please watch for the second part of our series, Top Ten Ways to Prepare for Retirement, coming soon from Luxury Beach, which will detail further steps to preparing for your departure from your working life.
