Mata Ortiz Pottery

This innovative and elegant style of pottery has taken shape under the guise of master potter Juan Quezada. With Juan's guidance, the entire pueblo of Mata Ortiz now produces their famous pots, which can be seen on display in the Puerto Vallarta airport. You can also experience this unique pottery at the Mata Ortiz Gallery in Old Town Puerto Vallarta.

Juan Quezada started displaying his beautiful Mexican pots in galleries around the world in the 1970s. Juan uses techniques first pioneered by the ancient people of Paquime, located in modern-day Chihuahua. Once Juan started teaching his Mata Ortiz pottery to other local artisans, the style truly took off. Now the techniques are distinctive and truly innovative, while retaining their roots in Pre-Hispanic culture. Walter P. Parks has even written a book on the phenomenon, The Miracle of Mata Ortiz.

Claudia Lovera, owner of the Mata Ortiz Gallery, located at 268-A Calle Lazaro Cardenas, says that the ceramics fascinate her. She wrote in the PV Mirror, “Sometimes I can remember the shape and the beauty of a pot I once held in my hands, and I smile--knowing that it is in a collection, a museum, or an amazing mansion somewhere in the world.”

A piece of Mata Ortiz pottery is the perfect addition to any luxurious villa. The pieces suggest both Mexican style and flair but also elegance and an eye for the truly exceptional.
