Ride like a Local: Buses in Banderas Bay

Bus stops are marked on the streets by a sign with a bus icon and if you don’t see one close by, ask a local who will be happy to point you to the nearest one.  Written on the front window of thebus you will find the route, which will thoughtfully include reference points (i.e.  Walmart, Marina, Sheraton) to help riders know where they’re going.  Note also that in Puerto Vallarta, buses will have a little sign in the window that will say “Centro”, indicating that the bus will enter the downtown core from the north, or “Tunel” indicating that the bus will bypass the city and re-enter from the south side of Vallarta.

Buses in Puerto Vallarta cost 6 pesos, 50 centavos (about 50 cents) to ride.  Exact change is always appreciated but if you don’t have it, the driver will make change for you and give you a ticket, which you should hold on to as from time to time, inspectors will board the bus and ask to see it.  And while on the bus, it’s not unusual to enjoy some local entertainment:  musicians, singers, salesmen and preachers all commonly board the bus and ride for a stop or two.  In the case of the musicians, it is local practice to tip them a couple of coins if you’ve enjoyed the music.

There are a lot of buses running in Banderas Bay and even a local will hop on the wrong one occasionally.  If you find yourself in unexpected territory, don’t panic.  The busses all run on a loop and if you tell your driver where you are trying to go, he will help re-direct you to the correct bus, so sit back and enjoy some secret parts of the Puerto Vallarta area that you may never have seen otherwise.
