Yoga in Later Life

As we get older, exercise needs to become an even more important part of our lives, not only to promote good health but to maintain mobility and prevent future illness or injury.  And one of the best ways for staying active in later years is with yoga which increases strength and flexibility while reducing stress.  Residents and visitors to Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit will find that yoga is a popular way of staying fit.

Many seniors struggle with high blood pressure and studies have shown that the combination of physical activity and calming and breathing techniques found in yoga can reduce blood pressure.  Yoga is also known to help those with chronic joint and muscle pain or arthritis.  Participants in a Harbor-UCLA Medical Center study reported a decrease in their use of pain medication when they were regularly practicing yoga.

Yoga is also promotes better sleeping habits, increasing sleep duration and decreasing the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.  And of course, yoga increases flexibility and range of motion allowing for increased and maintained mobility as you age.

Another great benefit of yoga is the social interaction gained from attending scheduled classes.
