Sweet and Spicy: Mexican Candies

And while you can find chocolate bars and other familiar treats in the aisles of grocery and convenience stores throughout Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, you’ll also find a huge selection of candy you’ve probably never seen or tasted before.

Mexican candies are usually a mix of very sweet and spicy flavors.  Tamarind fruit is often candied and then rolled in spice and sugar and is a popular sweet found in Mexican candy shops. Or you will find tamarind flavored chewy candies or paste in colorful squeeze tubes next to the register at any corner grocer.

Chamoy is another very popular Mexican flavor often found in Mexican sweet treats.  Made from pickled fruit, often mango, plum or apricots, chamoy is simultaneously sweet, salty, spicy and sour.  It is commonly used to flavor fruits, chips, or gummy candies.

It’s also easy to find candied nuts sold in small paper bags that are an entirely addictive snack.  Pecans, almonds, peanuts and walnuts are all commonly found, covered in sugar and cinnamon and with a crispy, crunchy shell.

Liverpool in the Galerias Vallarta shopping center has a nice selection of mix and match candies and a helpful staff that can assist you in explaining the flavors.  But one of the most fun ways to buy Mexican candy is from vendors with their huge wheeled carts that travel the streets and beaches of Banderas Bay.  It’s a cheap, sweet and fun way to try some traditional Mexican flavors.
