Tortillas in Mexico

Served as an accompaniment to almost everything and prepared in many different ways, tortillas in Mexico will certainly become an expected and delicious part of your culinary experience in Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit.

It is easy to find many kinds of tortillas here including flour and fancy varieties like spinach or sun-dried tomato.  But the most traditional tortillas which have been a staple of Mexican cuisine and culture for centuries, is the corn ormaize variety, which is unsurprising when you consider that Mexico produces 42 different kinds of corn.

Tortillas are mechanically mass produced, albeit freshly and deliciously, in many places including large grocery stores but it is still easy to find corner markets and restaurants where tortillas are made by hand and a warm, homemade version is wonderful without anything added.

Fresh tortillas are used as a side dish for most meals and also to make tacos, burritos, quesadillas and many other dishes.  They are also dried to make tortilla chips and for use in recipes like tortilla soup and chilaquiles, a popular breakfast dish.
