Performance Arts at the Teatro Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is set apart from other resort destinations in Mexico in that the city is awash with art and culture, ranging from indigenous Huichol crafts to avant-garde Sergio Bustamante sculptures on the Malecon to the sophisticated art galleries of Vallarta’s charming Old Town.  And performance arts are an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric which is why the Teatro Vallarta is an important venue for live music, theatre and dance.

Teatro Vallarta is a beautiful Mexican Contemporary space located in the downtown core of Puerto Vallarta just steps from the famous Malecon.  But the creation of the Teatro Vallarta was over 40 years in the making.  Construction on the building began in 1969 when a group of investors began work on what was originally intended to be a movie house, however, only a few months passed before the project was abandoned.  It was not until 4 years later when a second group of investors stepped in to complete the building that it finally opened in 1974.

Known then as the Cine Vallarta, the building was open until 1994 before closing its doors.  It remained empty for over a decade before it was leased by Plexon Group who started a massive renovation plan.  In March 2010, the Cine Vallarta reopened its grand entryway as the new Teatro Vallarta with 960 seats, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, an art gallery and an impressive modern reception area.

Hosting world class symphonies, large scale stage productions, children’s theatre events and traveling ballet and dance companies from around the world, the Teatro Vallarta is an important, sophisticated addition to the cultural scene in Puerto Vallarta
