Daytrip to El Tuito

El Tutio is a sleepy little rural Mexican town that feels like taking a step back into traditional Mexico.

El Tuitois located in the southernmost point of Banderas Bay in an area known as Cabo Corrientes.  The name El Tuito means “little beautiful valley” in the Nahuatla language of the ancient Aztecs and it certainly lives up to the name.  The buildings have all been painted with clay found in the region giving the walls a uniform orange hue.  And a cobblestone street leads you into a traditional main square.

Many of the houses around the square have been lovingly restored to their former glory and there is a cultural center that offers art exhibitions, dance lessons, a library and more.  City Hall is also located in the town square of El Tuito which features a mural depicting the founding of the town in the 16th century.

The tiny town has a population fewer than 4000 people and has many little shops and vendors selling local produce including artisan cheese and bread, organic coffee, and raicilla, which should not be missed.  Like mezcal andtequila, raicilla is distilled liquor made from the agave plant and produced in the state of Jalisco.  Raicilla has been sold as “moonshine” for generations but recently the government has approved it for legal sale.
