Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre, and only a half hour drive from the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, Sayulita was and remains a fishing village. While it harks back to the simpler times of a Mexican village, it has clearly expanded and grown into a small resort with every imaginable amenity for the foreign visitor. From the quaint Mexican plaza that indicates its founding, one can walk everywhere—to the beach, the jungle, the stores and restaurants, to the tiny hotels and luxury villas available to all tastes and at reasonable prices. Sayulita boasts four art galleries, displaying local, national and international art—from the art of the Huichol, a local tribe known for its fantastic beadwork and thread painting; to the high art you may be more familiar with. A local Italian eatery provides European wines for your discerning taste. If you want to bring the kids, there are professional childcare or au pair services, for the times when you might want to take a diving class from one of Sayulita’s diving schools. Sayulita has 24-hour medical care and a few pharmacies to go along with it. There are also dental, acupuncture and chiropractic services. If it’s the state of your spiritual health that concerns you, there are many options to choose from. Why not take a retreat, with yoga and massage? There is even a writing workshop retreat, for aspiring or established writers. How about a combined yoga and surfing school? The waves in Sayulita are gentle, but you can surf them. In fact, Sayulita regularly hosts surfing competitions locally and nationally. You can bring your own board or rent one, and a bogey boards for the kids. The community of Sayulita was among the first along its stretch of Pacific coastline to start a recycling program. The local community is much preoccupied with the state of the village’s environmental health, and is always accepting volunteers.
